From AD 594 books were printed by rubbing paper against inked woodblocks and folded into 'accordion books'. The imperial state was long the main producer, printing civil service exam textbooks. By the 17th century merchants, women and leisure readers used print, and from the late 19th century Shanghai led a shift to mechanical printing.
